Possession

Drawn by the destruction which is her essence, Ifurita stepped over the bodies of the various types of humanoid who had killed each-other to own the item she was now observing. A hollow metallic cylinder, smaller than an eyeball, the object's surface appearance interested her not at all. Focusing her senses, she paused to appreciate the crystalline perfection of the metal band's atomic structure. Surely it was this property that caused humans to value even mundane items of this material.

Probing deeper, Ifurita dismissed the refractive camouflage field that the object bestowed upon its possessor as an obvious lure and an almost trivial entry in her own inventory of weapons and techniques. Deeper still, below the level at which her creators had referred to as 'science' whose boundaries she had long since surpassed. Yet deeper, almost beyond the limits of even her own superb perceptions, she started to sense structure. Structure of such intricacy as to be beyond anything she had encountered before. As Ifurita examined the information incorporated into the object a simpler message glowed into life on its surface.

"Such a small thing," she thought. "To have caused so much suffering."

"A small thing," she repeated to herself, as her hand moved, almost of its own will, towards the item. "But so complex, so beautiful, so precious..."
