Character Description
He is quite tall with dark, tanned skin and reddish brown hair, his eyes are blue and have an intense piercing quality - the ' thousand yard stare' so often found in those that have mastered deadly fighting arts.
His hair is long but is shorter at the front and sides as if it had fairly recently been shaved in those areas. He is fairly handsome although he is perhaps too gaunt and weather beaten to be of the classical ideal, his nose is long and aristocratic, his eyes deep set.
Remmy wears an oriental style tunic and trousers with a long leather coat and a wide brimmed hat. He has a large bag that is worn on his bag and carries a staff. He is unshaven when first we meet him and is clearly very travel-worn, but seems oblivious to the aches and pains of his long journey.
His accent is still very strong and is obviously French when he starts to speak.
Personality - wise he is restrained in temperament but an impression is felt of a depth of passion and commitment that is frightening in a way. He seldom allows himself to kill another living being, preferring instead to use non lethal force - if he must kill then he does so quickly and cleanly and offers prayers to appease the departed spirit afterwards.
When he meditates he often plays his bamboo flute, a long plain instrument that makes a strange, alien sound to western ears, it helps him with his breathing exercises and also he just enjoys playing.
Since returning to the West he has come to believe that Nazism is pure evil, but most of its foot soldiers are dupes- he will avenge his father in true Kung fu movie fashion.

Character Description
5'7'', attractive (more-so than Emily), dark hair and eyes, slim. Tends to dress practically, but slightly more femininely than Emily, as her studies and research are a little less physical/dirty. Cultured and sophisticated, fits into upper-class society more smoothly than Emily ever did. Speaks perfect English with only a very slight French accent.

Since graduating from the Sorbonne, Andrie has accepted a professorship Of Anthropology and Ancient Civilisations at the Academe de Sciences in Paris. Even here, immersing herself in her work, she has been unable to escape her obsession. Being the only two prominent women in their field, the names of Gainsborough and Plainte have become inextricably linked, in particular because they so frequently submit papers on opposing sides of the same debates. Whilst frustrated at her inability to separate herself from her past, Andrie cannot help feeling a certain bitter satisfaction that, due to her knowledge of the right places to publish and the right academics to charm, her arguments are largely accepted as being correct. In her darker moments, however, Andrie sometimes believes that Emily's more hands-on attitude may provide her with a more accurate viewpoint on the real situation in comparison to her own more desk-bound approach. More recently, Andrie's studies have taken a different turn. She has found herself increasingly interested in the occult beliefs of ancient societies. She is unwilling to admit that this may be a waste of her time, rather she prefers to believe that this research gives her a valuable perspective that may give her an advantage over Emily's more narrow-minded outlook. Naturally, these motivations are not apparent to her conscious perceptions.
Even as single-minded an individual as Andrie was unable to ignore the progress of the war. After Paris was occupied, all academic research was suspended, supposedly temporarily. As a person with tremendous drive and intelligence, as well as an overwhelming need to distract herself from her own emotions, Andrie found this situation tremendously frustrating. In addition to this, Andrie's parents have come under pressure from the occupation government to turn over their funds and property to finance the German war effort. Whilst contemplating her situation in her compact but well-appointed apartment off L'Etoile, a messenger calls for Andrie. He delivers an envelope containing copies of documents relating to the position and academic achievements, at a variety of well respected universities and institutions in Berlin and Munich, of a Herr von Struldbrug. The name rings a slight bell, perhaps something from Johnathon Swift? The envelope also contains a hand-written and signed invitation to come to a meeting with him at his office in the Academe de Sciences the following afternoon. The location of the meeting turns out to be in a building with which Andrie is unfamiliar. On attending, she arrives at a corner office with a brass name plate on the door indicating that this is the office of Herr von Struldbrug. The plate seems old but in good condition, with none of the signs of recent installation. She knocks. "Come in Mademoiselle Plainte." The office seems larger than usual for a faculty member but this is possibly an effect of its corner location. Three things immediately become apparent to Andrie. The interior wall is lined with books on the occult, all of which seem to be first editions or impossibly old or rare original manuscripts. There is Alhazerad's Necronomicon, various works by John Dee and Aleister Crowley, histories of the Hermetic Order and the Egyptian Book of the Dead. There are also many books of which Andrie does not recognise the title or, in some cases, even the language. From the large picture windows occupying both exterior walls of the office, Andrie can see the Seine and a view of Notre Dame providing her with an unusual angle which gives her a perspective on the cathedral unlike any she has had before. She has to crane her neck slightly for the best effect but suspects this would be unnecessary if she were in the seat of the man behind the desk. At first glance the occupant of the office seems vaguely ugly in unremarkable kind of way. On closer inspection, however, it becomes clear that his apparent lack of hairline is in fact an extremely prominent brow, which is slightly projecting and is dimpled in the centre. His hunched-over appearance is caused by long arms which, if he were standing, Andrie suspects might reach to his knees. His overall impression is somewhat monkey-like but this is caused by his disproportionately large head and upper body and his appearance is actually somewhat striking, in a simian fashion. He is reading a book on Sumerian mythology which Andrie had, towards the end of her studies, been unsuccessfully trying to get hold of for weeks. He looks up. "Good afternoon Mme. Plainte." "Bonjour." "I am lead to understand that you have been experiencing some difficulties in pursuing your studies." "That is so, yes." "Well, permit me to make you a proposal. I would like you to pursue a research project for me. I am sure that you would find the material interesting and it would involve nothing you would find unethical or distasteful. How does this strike you?" "It sounds... intriguing." "Good. Take this book with you and meet with me again to discuss your thoughts on it." Von Struldbrug hands he the book he was reading and then his attention wanders to the window. Andrie decides the most graceful option is to simply leave and closes the door behind her. In the hallway she opens the book and finds an envelope containing a cheque made out to her for a thousand francs. For the next few months, Andrie meets with von Struldbrug, sometimes reporting on the documents he provides and sometimes on material she requests herself. The work is fascinating, as promised, and Andrie has no problems gaining any resource she requests. These include loans from other sites, a research staff and travel documentation to visit French institutions with artefacts of interest. Money is no object and von Struldbrug seems to handle everything personally without ever leaving his office. Andrie quickly becomes engrossed in the project to the exclusion of almost everything else. The data itself predominantly relates to Sumerian mythology and shows that their civilisation has strongly influenced almost every society that has existed since. Their culture was based on law, religion, technology and the occult, between which no distinctions are drawn. The language is heavily metaphorical and context dependent and each phrase contain multiple levels of information. It is hard to translate and Andrie would sometimes read passages which would, for instance, be straightforward descriptions of legal matters and then wander off into a Biblical style allegory involving the twin vine like strands of the Tree of Life before returning to the original topic as if no change had occurred. Over time, Andrie realises that the documents contain insights she would have earlier found unbelievable. It becomes clear that Sumerian records describe an earlier civilisation from which they inherited their social structure. The rules of this culture implicitly dominate modern society to the extent that knowledge of them gives one an insuperable advantage in life, able to manipulate situations and gain political advantage. The material also seem to describe technology far in advance of that supposed to have then existed and, indeed, superior to modern science. There is information relating to the manipulation and unification of forces, the use of those forces to construct materials upwards from the very smallest scales and to transmute, transmit and store both matter and energy. The origins and mechanisms of life seem to have been investigated and there are references made to personalities which seem to have artificial origins. These are originally subject to absolute, literal control but, as they increase in sophistication, require orders, discussion or even cajoling. The hard sciences are not Andrie's first strength but her research (again, completely unobstructed) seems to bear out the truth of her findings. Indeed, in areas of theoretical or recent knowledge where the data does not match current findings, it is her research that seems the more consistent. Andrie comes to realise that she is not only being offered knowledge but power. Political and physical power but also power of a third kind. For the records she has contain not only social and technical information but also occult knowledge. It strains her credibility but the practicality of the more mundane knowledge she has gained is so evident and the esoteric is so inseparable from the temporal that she finds it almost impossible to not believe in one without accepting the truth of the other. At this time Andrie discovers a Sumerian myth cycle which relates to Inanna, the goddess of Love and Battle. It tells how, when threatened by Kur, which can mean "mountain", "foreign land" or "great beast", called Ebih which "poured fearsome terror on the abodes of the gods". She goes to Anu, the king and most powerful of the gods and requests permission to destroy the threat. He does not believe she is powerful enough to take on this opponent and responds, "You cannot pass through its terror and fear. The mountain range's radiance is fearsome. Maiden Inanna, you cannot oppose it." Inanna descends into the Land of the Dead where she is required to pass through seven gates and remove one of her garments (elsewhere referred to as being weapons or the source of her power) at each one until she stands naked and defenceless before Erishkigal, the Queen of the Other World. Erishkigal

...fastened on Inanna the eye of death.
She spoke against her the word of wrath.
She uttered against her the cry of guilt

She struck her.

Inanna was turned into a corpse,
A piece of rotting meat
And was hung from a hook on the wall.
Enki, the god of Knowledge and Wisdom, and something of a mentor to Inanna, learns of her fate and sends two of his creations, the "Shining Ones", to rescue her. After Inanna emerges from the Abzu of Eridu, Enki's domain,

My lady confronted the mountain range. She advanced step by step.
She sharpened both edges of her dagger. She grabbed Ebih's neck as if
ripping up esparto grass. She pressed the dagger's teeth into its
interior. She roared like thunder.

The rocks forming the body of Ebih clattered down its flanks. From its
sides and crevices great serpents spat venom. She damned its forests
and cursed its trees. She killed its oak trees with drought. She poured
fire on its flanks and made its smoke dense. The goddess established
authority over the mountain. Holy Inanna did as she wished.
Inanna was originally the youngest and least powerful of the Annunaki, the Sumerian deities (also referred to as the First and in the case of the most powerful, the Seven Who Decree Fate or the Many Named), but after this time none of them is able to stand against her, although Enki remains her ally. Andrie comes to believe that that this myth represents a ritual for gaining ultimate power through the mechanism of self-sacrifice, in effect killing a part of yourself. At this time she is summoned to von Struldbrug's office. There, he informs her of a German expedition to Iraq, the modern location of ancient Sumeria. An ancient and architecturally anachronistic temple has been unearthed at Nippur, the city-state of Enlil. Enlil is the god of Air and second of the gods, after Anu, to become head of the pantheon. Enlil's temple at Nippur is referred to as "the Gate of Enlil". Andrie conceives the idea that the temples of the Seven Who Decree Fate may correspond to the seven gates passed through in the Inanna Cycle.
Von Struldbrug allows Andrie to go on an expedition to Nippur accompanied by a troop of German soldiers. After being delayed in Baghdad, Andrie and her party are flying south over Iraq when a tremendous vertical beam lights up the sky over Nippur. This is followed by six other beams at different locations. Flying over Nippur it could be seen that there was another archaeological party on the site. Even at this distance it is clear that at least one of them is a woman. Andrie knows that one of them is Emily. After all, who else could it be? What is also clear is that the entire temple is exposed in the middle of a huge glassy crater, as if caused by extreme heat. Andrie reasons that if this temple is exposed then the other six temples were probably exposed by blasts as well and suggests that they proceed to the next one at Isin, the city state of Ki, the earth goddess.
At Isin, the temple is indeed exposed but its door is sealed by the Qabbalistic Sephiroth or ten linked circles representing the Hebrew Tree of Life. It is only when Andrie touches this seal that she flashes back to the most traumatic time in her life, when she first made her romantic intentions clear to Emily and saw instantly the look of shock and sympathy in her eyes.
"You'll never know how much you hurt me," Andrie swears to herself and to this day Emily has no conception of the true degree of Andrie's feelings. The door swings open...
Inside the temple there are seven levels, the walls each telling a creation myth analogous to the Biblical genesis. In this story though, after a certain stage the world was remade twice; the world of the sun and the world of the moon. At one time they appeared to be linked at the mountain of Ebih until the other world was somehow perceived as a threat and the link was destroyed by Inanna, here represented as Ana, her destructive aspect. On the bottom level of the ziggurat is a stone plinth with a parchment on it. Andrie picks up the manuscript and she is no longer here. She is there, watching the war, the threat from the other world, the destruction of Ebih by the Evening Star. When she comes back to herself and looks at the parchment it is blank. It doesn't matter though, she knows the place and the time is now.
Though ostensibly her warders, the soldiers follow in her wake, rationalising as they go. According to a plan of von Struldbrug, or someone else, the soldiers turn out to be agents, able to provide Andrie with papers and smuggle her into the United States, even into the heart of their military complex in Los Alamos, Nevada. By her orders, Emily is kidnapped, separated from her companions and primed to believe that Andrie is a helpless victim of a conspiracy within the Nazi Party. Her German companions do seem to be working under the express orders of von Struldbrug, outside of the normal chain of command, so this seems as good a story as any. At the location that Andrie feels is the right place, a girder structure with a large egg-like device at its apex in the middle of the military testing ground in the Nevada desert, Emily is offered the choice between freedom and going along with the German's plans. Andrie has learnt from them some of the atrocities that are occurring in Germany and elsewhere and plays at Emily's heartstrings with a story of how her parents will be deported, tortured and murdered if their orders are not followed. After some persuasion, Emily accedes to Andrie's request. At the moment of Emily's greatest vulnerability Andrie tries to destroy the part of herself that causes her weakness. She draws a gun and shoots at Emily.
There is a bright white light. Time seems to freeze. Andrie hears a voice say "I am become Shiva, destroyer of worlds," and then she is no longer in her body. She passes through a dark void, dotted with lights. She sees two sisters, one dark, one fair and then they seem to split into three sets of two. She sees a man, an ordinary man but one who represents all of humanity. She sees a woman but surely no human woman could have this ethereal beauty. Her hair is ash grey, her face is chalk white and her eyes are pupil-less circles of violet. She fades and behind her, behind everything, there lurks the bulky shape of a man, formed from darkness and shadow.
Andrie wakes up in a forest. The flora and fauna are unfamiliar to her and on exploration she arrives at a village. The inhabitants seem somewhat in awe of her and to her surprise she fins that she is able to understand them and vice-versa although when they talk she hears perfect French but sees their lips form different shapes.
The villagers take care of her and tell her stories of how travellers like her have arrived at the royal palace and how their coming was prophesised, as this is the time of threat from the other race. Andrie decides to make a journey.

Character Description
Phoebe Mosee was born on 13 August 1860 in Darke County, Ohio. The fifth daughter of Jacob and Susan Mosee, the Quaker family had migrated to Ohio after the family tavern in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania burned. Jacob Mosee died of pneumonia in 1866, leaving her mother with a family of seven children, Lyda, Sarah, Ellen, Elizabeth, Phoebe, Johnny and Hilda. The eldest of these, was only fifteen years old. For the next several years, Phoebe helped her family by trapping and performing chores on the family farm.
At the age of eight or nine, she went to live with the Superintendent's family at the county poor farm. At one point during her stay at the poor farm, she was "lent out" to a local farm family as a servant. According to her diary, this family abused her mentally and physically. After two years, she ran back to the poor farm and remained there until she was thirteen or fourteen. While there, she learned to sew and received an education.
When about eight years of age she had her first experience with a rifle. Seeing a squirrel at play on a rail fence one day when alone, she got down her father's old muzzle loader, and resting the gun across the limb, cut the squirrel's throat with a bullet.
When Phoebe returned to her family, she found that they had been suffering through a very difficult period. Phoebe's mother had remarried but this second husband died after leaving her with a new child. Phoebe's mother then married a third time. Even with this remarriage, the family finances were not very good and the family was on the verge of losing their farm. Upon Phoebe's return home, she used her father's old Kentucky rifle to hunt small game for resale in Greenville and hotels and restaurants in northern Ohio. Prior to leaving for the poor farm, she had been trapping game and had taught herself how to use the rifle.
Phoebe was so successful at hunting that she was able to pay the entire mortgage on the family farm with the money she had earned from the sale of her game. In her diary she notes "Oh, how my heart leaped with joy as I handed the money to mother and told her that I had saved enough to pay it off!" At the time, she was fifteen years old.
As a result of her accurate shooting and prolific production, Phoebe gained a reputation in the region. She was particularly noted for her ability to place the shot in the head of the animal so as to leave the meat unspoiled by the shotgun pellets or bullets. The most well known example of this was her shooting the head off of a running quail at the age of twelve.
During her career, Phoebe Mosee established many records with a rifle, among her best being the breaking of 945 tossed balls out of a 1000; 96 small clay pigeons out of 100, 50 straight double clays and 49 live birds out of 50. It is also recorded that she broke 4,772 glass balls out of 5,000 in one days shooting. She has shot wild deer in America, wild bear in Germany, and roebuck in Austria.
Phoebe Mosee is slight in build, a little below the average in height. She has clear, keen, blue-gray eyes, and black flowing hair. She possesses a rare modesty for a person that has followed the life she has, and is unaffected and sincere, and of charming personality.
Her brother, John Henry Mosee, was born in 1862 and is married to Laura Ellen Mosee, ne้ York. The couple live at home in Darke County where Ellen is a child of a well known family. At this time they have three children, Elza, Bernard Julius and John born in 1884, 1886 and 1888 respectively. (John dies aged only five but the couple go on to have a further three children, Joseph Cletus, 1893, Chelsea, 1898 and Othal Lee 1902. Joseph also dies after only one year.)
