Note: Every game I watch, I will provide an insight into how the game might have panned out. This is by no means an in depth analysis from an analyst's point of view. Every game I watch, I watch as a fan. And I write the analysis very soon after the game to ensure the passion and feelings are in the analysis so you can understand how the average football mad fan may have seen the game. Please do not get offended by any remark made towards a player, coach or other staff. It is not intended to offend. But simply how I felt at that point in time, full of adrenaline and excitement, as I am cheering my team on!
The cycling had ended and Simon Hill had excitedly announced that the Matildas had scored and were 1-0 up.
Gleaming with excitement and nervousness, I sat down prepared to watch 60 minutes of do or die football, wondering every minute of the way what will happen next.
The Greeks had a bit of play in the second half, and did look like capitalising. But I think from the 60 minute mark onwards it was the Matildas (but for two plays) and that is the most promising part.
I am confused about the offside decision. And it should have been 2-0, not including the wasted (for choice of a better word) opportunities.
The Greek goal keeper was stunning, but everytime she booted the ball out, it came back with numbers. The amount of breaks through the centre, taking on 2-3 players, even the amount of times we had 3 vs 3 with a perfectly timed through ball, or wide pass to the player who would then cross it in were almost countless.
The play was stunning, our midfield and defence was strong, but the missed opportunities was worrying, yet promising.
Sally Shipard stood out and was very skillful. An asset to the Matildas and nobody should question her involvement in the team, or whether her position was warranted now.
DeVanna was another stand out player. 4 very close offside decisions, a few near goals. Does anybody know why she didn't start?
I mentioned earlier "but for two attacks". It was the two Greece attacks, particularly the one with seconds to go that were very worrying. We had numerous chances and should easily have been 3, even 4 goals up. And for one attack to undo it all would have been devistating, or a miraculous home town comeback depending which side of the fence you were sitting.
What a fantastic victory for the girls, and a sign of things to come. I think we should be able to atleast challenge the USA, who defeated Brazil 2-0, and Greece 3-0.
If we can just make the quarter final stage, the Olympic dream would have been realised. Then with everything else being a bonus, who knows how far the girls will get.
